Emusic.com Using Free Music to Lure Customers

EMusic.com yesterday began a limited-time promotion in hopes of picking up some of Napster's former users.

Using the tag line “MP3 is not a dirty word,” users will be able to download any MP3 album, or up to 15 singles from its music catalog, free of charge or commitment.

The Redwood City, CA-based company began the online marketing campaign to tell digital music fans as well as the music industry that there are “viable, legal alternatives to unauthorized file-sharing that do not require cumbersome digital rights management.”

Those taking advantage of the offer can also download a free copy of Bruce Fries' MP3 and Internet Audio Handbook — a guide to digital music.
