Egarden.com Gets Weeded Out

Egarden, part of consumer products manufacturer U.S. Home and Garden, recently ceased operations as an online marketplace for the lawn and garden industry.

The site, www.egarden.com, was designed to serve business-to-business buyers and sellers of garden-oriented products ranging from seeds to rat poison. However, the 4-year-old Web site launched as a business-to-consumer vendor before switching its business model in 1999.

Egarden.com has its entire operations for sale as a package, said Linda Watson, president of the Raleigh, NC-based firm. Watson said this includes its Web domain name, Oracle e-business software, a Sun server, office space and proprietary garden-oriented content.

“We'd like to sell it all at once,” she said. “But if that doesn't happen soon enough, we will liquidate everything.”
