EBay is warning its members about an e-mail that purports to be from the company's management asking for personal information such as password and ID.
The online auction site said the message, which it thinks originated from servers in Iran and was sent by someone with a registered domain name in Scotland, suggests that the recipient can learn an eBay secret by responding to the message.
“Several eBay users have notified us about a possible attempt to gain access to their private information through an e-mail solicitation made to appear as if it is originating from eBay,” the company said in a note on its marketing announcement board. “The purpose of the e-mail is to secure the user's eBay ID and eBay passwords.”
EBay is warning users not to respond to the e-mail and reminds them that company management does not ask for password and credit card information by e-mail. It also warns them to be wary of any e-mail message purporting to be from eBay that is not sent from an eBay e-mail address.
“EBay will never send you any request or solicitation from a non-eBay e-mail account,” the company said.
