DMer Andrew E. Svenson Dies

Direct marketing professional Andrew E. Svenson Jr. died Nov. 15 after an extended illness. He was 66.

Svenson most recently served as development director for the civil rights organization Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, AL, where he was involved in fundraising for Christian ministries and other nonprofits and retail and direct marketing for Christian publishers.

After a stint as a reporter for the Bethlehem (PA) Globe-Times, Svenson entered direct marketing in 1961 as mail-order manager for Doubleday & Company, New York. During his 40-year career, he held senior marketing positions with Cornell University Press, Weekly Reader Children's Book Club, Meredith Corp. and Fuller & Dees Marketing Group.

Svenson launched Andrew Svenson Co. Inc. in 1978 as a consultancy serving book and magazine publishers. He also owned Things of Science, a monthly membership club offering scientific experiment kits to children ages 10-16.

Svenson was also a member of the Direct Marketing Association, Sarasota, FL.

He is survived by his wife, Joy Jeannine Svenson; seven children from two previous marriages; two stepsons; a brother; four sisters; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; six cousins and 11 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. today at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1728 S. Hull St., Montgomery, AL. The family will receive visitors at the church at 1 p.m. Interment will be at Alabama Heritage Cemetery in Montgomery.
