The impact of the euro and the European Union's data protection directive on US direct marketers doing business in Europe will be the focus of a special conference sponsored by the DMA's international council on June 14.
Columbia University's Professor Seamus O'Cleireacain will lead off the discussion with an exposition on what introduction of the euro earlier this year means for the European economy.
The EU's data protection directive will be dissected next, specifically how the law that went into effect last October 24 will affect acquisition, use and transfer of customer information from Europe to the US.
IBM's William Whitehurst will describe how the directive has impacted the company’s Internet activities and how the company is complying with the law's requirements in many aspects of its business. DMA International Vice President Charles Prescott will chair the session, which will also feature InteliTech's Joseph Furnia.
Other highlights include a discussion between mailers and list brokers about the European list scene in terms of cost, availability, strategies and differences in European and U.S. list businesses, and an examination of getting mail into Europe.
A series of roundtables wind up the session on such subjects as postal rates, merge/purge, call centers, payment services and the best ways to penetrate the big three markets of Germany, the U.K. and France as well as Europe's other markets.
