Circulation Increase Helps Harry and David Boost Sales

Net sales for Harry and David Holdings Inc.’s fiscal first quarter totaled $57.7 million, a 7.5 percent gain over last year, the company said yesterday.

The Medford, OR-based multichannel marketing company, formerly known as Bear Creek Holdings Inc., owns the brands Harry and David and Jackson & Perkins. The quarter ended Sept. 24.

Harry and David’s direct marketing net sales, which include catalog, Internet, business-to-business and outbound telemarketing sales, totaled $26.1 million, a 5.4 percent increase. The increase was primarily because of an increase in catalog circulation and Internet marketing initiatives. The brand’s catalog circulation increased 11 percent year-over-year.

The company also reported a net loss for the first quarter that totaled $17.3 million compared to a net loss of $20.7 million last year.
