Brookstone's Direct Sales Rise 8.3% in Q4

Brookstone Inc., Nashua, NH, cited “tremendous gains” in its direct-to-consumer segment for the fourth quarter in saying yesterday that total 2002 fiscal year sales rose 6.5 percent to $375.9 million.

DTC sales for the quarter improved 8.3 percent to $30.1 million on a planned reduction in circulation. Same-store sales for the quarter improved 7.8 percent, and total sales were up 9.1 percent to $185.2 million.

Michael Anthony, chairman/president/CEO, said he expected “a record financial performance in our direct-to-customer segment this year.”

DTC sales for the year, which ended Feb. 1, increased 3.3 percent to $65.6 million. Same-store sales for the year rose 3.5 percent.

Also, Nordstrom, Inc. reported preliminary sales of $316.5 million during the four-week period ending Feb 1, representing an increase of 6.7 percent for the comparable period ended Feb. 2, 2002. Same-store sales increased 0.8 percent.

Preliminary fourth-quarter (November through January) sales of $1.7 billion were up 7.1 percent compared with 2001 Q4 sales of $1.6 billion. Quarterly same-store sales increased 1.5 percent. Preliminary full-year sales of $6 billion increased 6.1 percent compared with 2001 as full-year same-store sales were up 1.3 percent.
