Bob Stone: A teacher’s teacher

Bob Stone’s passing rekindles some pleasant memories. When I started teaching direct marketing at Northwestern University’s School of Continuing Studies in 1995, I used his “Successful Direct Marketing Methods” as the course textbook and invited him to make guest appearances each semester. He always obliged and showed up eager to be part of the learning process.

Even in later years when he slowed down due to age and health issues, my students and I were honored to have such a direct marketing icon share his wealth of wisdom and experience.

Bob also found time to discuss with me how to better articulate his proven techniques and theories to the class. He was the consummate teacher’s teacher. I’m sure many of my students who have gone on to productive direct marketing careers value his contributions to their education.

He was a master and mentor of direct marketing and a good friend as well. Thanks, Bob, for the memories.
