Anti-spam group Mail Abuse Prevention System LLC reportedly has warned e-mail services provider Exactis.com about the e-mail marketing practices of one of its clients.
The nonprofit group maintains the Realtime Blackhole List of IP addresses MAPS compiles to “limit the transport of known-to-be-unwanted mass e-mail,” according to information posted at Mail-abuse.org. Companies put on the RBL are unable to deliver e-mail to subscribing Internet service providers, reportedly resulting in 40 percent to 50 percent of their e-mail bouncing back.
At least one representative of Exactis and representatives of other organizations in the e-mail marketing community met with a representative of MAPS at the Association for Interactive Media Interact 2000 conference in Palm Springs, CA, earlier this week.
However, Exactis CEO Tom Detmer said his Denver, CO-based company was not the focus of the meeting. “That’s not the case at all,” said Detmer. “They brought concerns to us about one of our particular clients, and we’re addressing those concerns about that one particular client.”
Detmer declined to name the client.
Also at the Palm Springs meeting were representatives of e-mail service provider MessageMedia, direct marketing firm Roska Direct, the e-mail arm of Netscape and AIM executive director Ben Isaacson.
The meeting also addressed efforts to make “double opt-in” an industry standard, said Detmer. “We are working closely with MAPS to form the future direction of our industry,” said Detmer.
Representatives of MAPS did not respond to several requests for interviews.
