Amazon to close three fulfillment centers

Internet retailer Amazon.com is closing order-fulfillment centers in three states.

The centers are in Munster, IN; Chambersburg, PA; and Red Rock, NV, and would affect 210 employees, according to Patty Smith, Amazon’s director of corporate communications.

“As our business grows, we regularly evaluate our fulfillment network to ensure that we are well-positioned for future growth,” she said.  “Last year we added approximately three million square feet in North American fulfillment center capacity, and this year we plan to expand our facility in Goodyear, AZ, by several hundred thousand square feet.  These changes will enable us to better balance product mix and customer orders across the fulfillment network year round.”

Eligible associates who work in these three buildings will have the chance to transfer to another US fulfillment center, she said.
