Advo, MediaNews Team on L.A. Insert, Newspaper Program

Advo and MediaNews Group will offer a program this summer that places inserts in newspapers and direct mail to reach 2 million households in the Los Angeles area, the companies said Friday.

This is the third instance in which MediaNews and Advo have worked together.

Beginning in August, newspaper subscribers will receive inserts from Advo's ShopWise program on top of their Wednesday newspapers, while others will get the inserts in their mailboxes, primarily on Tuesdays.

MediaNews Group's Los Angeles Newspaper Group includes the Los Angeles Daily News, Long Beach Press Telegram, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Pasadena Star-News, Whittier Daily News, San Bernardino County Sun, Redlands Daily Facts and Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.

In 2000, the Denver Newspaper Agency — the joint operating agreement arm of The Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News — initiated a similar program with Advo that increased weekly inserts from 10 to 60. Last year, MediaNews' Connecticut Post and Advo also began a joint distribution program.

Advo, Windsor, CT, said its joint business relationships with newspaper companies will now reach more than 7.5 million households. It has relationships with Gannett, Knight Ridder, the New York Times Co., E.W. Scripps, The Orange County Register, Poynter Institute and the Tribune Co.

MediaNews, Denver, is the nation's seventh-largest newspaper company, publishing 50 daily newspapers and 121 non-daily publications in 12 states.
