Acura sponsors WAP site for golfers

Mobile search and content provider go2 recently launched go2 Golf, a mobile Web application that provides golf enthusiasts with content from Golf Digest and relevant location information.

The WAP site targets the more than 30 million active golfers in the United States and can be accessed on all major carriers. It is sponsored by Japanese automaker Honda’s Acura brand and launched in conjunction with its latest SUV, the 2007 MDX.

“It think go2 Golf is kind of a quantum leap in terms of mobile content,” said Lee Hancock, CEO of go2, Irvine, CA.

Users can text the word “Golf” to 46211 to receive a link or reminder through a SMS message with the go2 Golf URL.

Golf Digest has more than 1.6 million subscribers to its print magazine. It provides top rankings of golf courses, equipment, retailers and other helpful tips for the new WAP site.

Go2 Golf also features the 2007 PGA tour schedule, local weather forecasts, turn-by-turn driving directions and easy access to nearby points-of-interest. Users search for relevant golf information through a series of menus.

In addition to the Acura sponsorship reminders on the site, users can link to photos and product information including performance, technology, safety and car specifications for the 2007 Acura MDX.

Los Angeles interactive agency Genex helped build the car campaign through go2’s Mobile Product Showcase.

“This site would not have happened without Acura’s sponsorship,” Mr. Hancock said. “We’ve had the idea of building deep vertical channels. You’ll be seeing a lot more channels roll out in the future.”

Go2 began as a local search application but has also become a content provider in recent years, including mobile movies and specific college WAP sites. The company hopes to continue to partner with leading publishers to make more content available by mobile phone.

“We know how to make money with WAP traffic today,” Mr. Hancock said. “When a company is looking to get into mobile we can tell them if it’s going to work and revenue share. It’s a win-win-win situation.”
