Sprint, Dell Target Small, Midsize Firms

Sprint and Dell are forming an alliance to focus on enhancing and growing Web-hosting and e-commerce offerings to the small and midsize business markets.

The companies said they expect to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in sales combined in the next seven years.

Sprint and Dell plan to develop an array of bundled hosting services tailored to the growing needs of small and midsize business customers. Sprint will use Dell PowerEdge servers and PowerVault storage in its hosting business, and Dell will buy selected telecommunications services from Sprint.

Both companies said the alliance will build off the strengths of each other's core businesses, such as Sprint's capabilities in communications transport and Dell's knowledge of enterprise equipment, including PowerEdge servers and PowerVault Storage and Internet infrastructure. They hope the combination brings small and midsize business customers a robust, reliable and tailored Web hosting solution.

Sprint said the addition of Web hosting for small and midsize business customers will complement its broadband offerings for those customers, including Sprint ION — Sprint's converged network solution — and Sprint Business DSL.
