A judge in Pennsylvania has approved an injunction against the operator of the Miss Cleo psychic network, ordering the company to cease contact with consumers who have requested no further calls, the state attorney general's office said Friday.
The order, issued in Cambria County, also prohibits Access Resource Services from trying to collect payments from consumers in the state who are disputing outstanding bills. The company operates the Psychic Readers Network made famous by late-night DRTV commercials featuring purported psychic Youree Cleomili Harris, better known as Miss Cleo.
A lawyer for Access Resource Services in New York did not return phone calls for comment.
The Pennsylvania attorney general's office won the injunction as part of its ongoing lawsuit, first filed in November 2000. The lawsuit accuses Access Resource Services of deceiving consumers into believing calls to the psychic network were free and then billing them as much as $4.99 a minute.
Fort Lauderdale-based Access Resource Services settled a similar lawsuit with the Missouri attorney general's office for $75,000 last year. The company also was recently the subject of an investigation by the New York Consumer Protection Board, which accused it of violating the state's do-not-call list and practicing deceptive marketing.
