FedEx Rates Rise Jan. 6

Package carrier FedEx Corp. will raise rates for domestic shipments and U.S. exports by an average of 3.5 percent to 3.9 percent Jan. 6, 2003.

The move, which the company announced yesterday, follows a Nov. 8 announcement of similar price increases by United Parcel Service.

Prices for FedEx Express will rise an average of 3.5 percent for shipments within the United States and overseas. Rates for FedEx Express between the United States and Puerto Rico will increase an average of 5 percent. FedEx Ground service prices will rise an average of 3.9 percent. FedEx also will increase its delivery area surcharges from $1.50 to $1.75 and raise Saturday pickup and delivery surcharges from $10 to $12.50.

The 2003 FedEx Express list rates will be available on fedex.com Dec. 7. FedEx Ground list rates will be available online Dec. 14.

Other features of the 2003 FedEx Express rate change include:

· Applying dimensional weight pricing to international shipments at or below one cubic foot, except for shipments between the United States and Puerto Rico.

· Relaunching FedEx International Priority Freight service from the United States to Puerto Rico with a one-day service commitment. The current IPF service, with a three-day commitment, will be offered as FedEx International Economy Freight.
