As Tropical Storm Cindy hit Louisianna yesterday, a state of emergency by the governor caused a state law to go into effect temporarily banning telemarketing calls to residents in some parts of the state.
Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco's emergency declaration affects the parishes of Jefferson, Lafourche, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. Tammany and Terrebonne. While the declaration remains in effect, all telemarketing calls into those areas, except those made by the Red Cross, are illegal under a law enacted in 2003.
The cause of the state of emergency is wind damage, flooding and severe tornadoes that accompanied Tropical Storm Cindy, which has left 318,000 residents without power. The last time the telemarketing ban took effect was last September when Hurricane Ivan struck Louisiana.
