16.8B spent on Net advertising in ’06: Interactive Advertising Bureau

The Interactive Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers estimate that Internet advertising revenues for 2006 reached $16.8 billion, a 34 percent increase over the previous record of $12.5 billion in 2005.

Fourth-quarter revenue for 2006 totaled just under $4.8 billion, making that quarter the highest on record. This revenue for 2006 represents a 32 percent increase over the same period in 2005 and a 15 percent increase over third-quarter 2006, estimated at slightly under $4.2 billion.

The IAB estimated the 2006 fourth-quarter and full-year online ad revenue figures by surveying and aggregating data from 15 leading online ad sellers.

The results were then extrapolated to calculate the total estimated industry revenue figure.

Actual third- and fourth-quarter results will be reported in the full “2006 Internet Advertising Revenue Report,” expected in April 2007.

The IAB sponsors the Internet Advertising Revenue Report, which is conducted independently by PricewaterhouseCoopers. The full report is issued twice yearly for full- and half-year data, and quarterly estimates are issued for the first third and fourth quarters.
