Yahoo Upgrades E-Mail

Yahoo is upgrading its free Yahoo Mail, leading some to compare it to Microsoft's Outlook. The upgraded Yahoo Mail has a fast and “easy-to-use” interface that functions like a desktop client application, according to the company.

Launched in beta yesterday to a limited number of its users in the United States, the upgrade will be available to additional users worldwide in the next few months. The new version will be available to all users after the beta test.

Despite the desktop functionality, Yahoo is touting the new e-mail as unique.

“We're excited to be testing some features that other Web mail providers don't offer,” said Yahoo spokeswoman Karen Mahon.

New features include drag-and-drop e-mail organization; search of e-mail headers, bodies and attachments; the ability to view multiple e-mails at the same time; and keyboard shortcuts. The company said it will be evaluating different advertising placements within Yahoo Mail as part of the upgrade in the coming months.
