Yahoo's announcement that it will expand its job search function yesterday to let users search jobs from across the Internet is another attempt to differentiate itself from other search engines.
Yahoo is extending the function beyond advertised jobs on its Yahoo HotJobs site to display jobs by copying them off the Web sites of employers, a move that will affect advertisers of jobs and related services.
“We have found that more jobs increase the number of job seekers, and, when combined with Yahoo's leading search technology, lead to more qualified candidates for our [recruitment] customers,” said Dan Finnigan, general manager of Yahoo HotJobs.
Yahoo HotJobs offers both paid and crawled job listings in addition to career management tools such as resume advice and background checks. This is the first time one of the three leading job sites — HotJobs, Monster and CareerBuilder — will incorporate free listings into its database. Before, they have required payment from employers.
“No more searching dozens of sites to find the jobs that you want,” said a statement in Yahoo's HotJobs section. “We've already collected jobs from major Web sites you know and also hard-to-find ones you may have missed.”
The job search launch is part of a plan to take Yahoo's technologies in search, match, personalization and targeting into the recruitment market, the company said.
