Yahoo Expands Desktop Search

Yahoo added a contextual search to its Desktop Search service this week to get desktop users to Web searches faster, and officially launched the service.

Yahoo Desktop has been in beta since January.

“We've steadily been working on improving the core file, e-mail and document search capabilities,” Albert Lee, senior product manager at Yahoo Search, wrote in the company blog.

In the new LiveWords feature, Desktop Search users get back brief search results by highlighting text and clicking the LiveWords button. When users are searching for e-mails, IM archives, contacts or documents, they can highlight text within their last preview pane, then click the LiveWords button to start their search.

“Selecting a word or phrase that you'd like to know more about will … present you with the most relevant results,” Lee wrote.
