Yahoo Buys E-Mail Firm Oddpost

Yahoo added to its e-mail resources with the recent acquisition of Web e-mail provider Oddpost.

Oddpost, San Francisco, provides a Web-based e-mail service offering 50 megabytes of storage space for $30 yearly. Oddpost boasts a built-in RSS reader, used to aggregate news headlines from the Internet.

Details of the transaction were not disclosed.

The purchase ups the ante in Yahoo’s battle to fend off Google in its assault on Yahoo’s key e-mail business. Google is to release its new Web e-mail service, Gmail, in the coming months.

In response to Gmail, which offers users 1,000 megabytes of storage, Yahoo last month revamped its free e-mail service to give users 100 megabytes.

Yahoo CEO Terry Semel said on a recent conference call with investors that the company planned further advances in its e-mail offering. In a posting on its site, Oddpost said it would work on new improvements to Yahoo Mail and would move Oddpost subscribers over when a new version is released.
