WPP Group posts 10% Q1 revenue gain in North America

Communications holding company WPP Group reported first quarter revenue for the three months ended March 31 rose 15.6% for a total of $3.08 billion.

The North America region remained relatively strong throughout the quarter, growing faster than might be expected based on reports of an economic slowdown, according to a statement from the company. The region posted a 10.7% increase in revenue for a total of $1.15 billion.

In other regions that WPP does business, the UK posted a 6% gain in revenue; Continental Europe, a 20.5% gain; and Asia Pacific, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East, a 25.7% gain.

By communications services sector, the branding and identity, healthcare and specialists communications sector (which includes its DM agencies OgilvyOne, 141 Worldwide, Wunderman, RMG Connect and G2), showed the strongest growth with a 23.3% gain. The advertising and media investment management sector posted a 12% revenue gain; the information, insight and consultancy sector, a 12.6% increase; and the public relations and public affairs, a 14.9% gain.

Net new billings of $1.1 billion were won during the first quarter.
