Worldata Will Ask Court to Block Sound-Alike E-Mail Firm

Complaints are to be filed in a Florida court this week against a sound-alike competitor to Worldata Inc., according to an executive at the list firm.

The competitor calls itself World Data Networks and offers opt-in e-mail lists as well as other e-marketing services similar to those provided by Worldata. And both firms are in Boca Raton, FL.

“Our goal is for them to stop representing themselves as a company that is both in name and in service similar to ours,” said Jay Schwedelson, corporate vice president at Worldata. “They are trying to use the goodwill and brand that we've established over the years to benefit themselves.”

As of yesterday, Schwedelson said he expected that the complaints would be filed within 48 hours, including a cease-and-desist order and a request for an injunction.

Worldata was alerted by several of its clients after World Data Networks solicited them via e-mail.

“The truth of the matter is that there is confusion that is being caused in our marketplace, and it's to our detriment,” Schwedelson said.

“We are going to be pursuing the most severe legal remedy possible,” he said.
