Williams-Sonoma Earnings Rise to $15.4M

Williams-Sonoma Inc.'s net earnings for the 13 weeks ended May 5 totaled $15.4 million compared with $500,000 in the 13 weeks ended April 29, 2001, on a post-split basis, the San Francisco company said yesterday.

Net revenue, including shipping fees, increased 14.6 percent to $478.4 million in the first fiscal quarter of 2002 from $417.6 million in the first fiscal quarter of 2001.

Net retail sales rose 20 percent to $267.6 million from $223 million. Total comparable store sales increased 6.2 percent, compared with the 2.8 percent decrease recorded in the first fiscal quarter of 2001.

Direct-to-customer net sales rose 6.3 percent to $178.3 million from $167.7 million. This increase primarily was driven by strong growth in the Pottery Barn and Pottery Barn Kids brands.
