What’s the best way to save the USPS?

There’s no shortage of opinions on how to save the US Postal Service. Four of them were printed in the March 17 letters to the editor section of The New York Times.

Among them was a letter from Fredric Rolando, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, who opposes the proposed reduction in home delivery to five days per week. He reaffirmed that “the worst thing Congress could do is to allow it to drop Saturday delivery instead of fixing the prefunding problem.”

“Eliminating Saturday delivery would send the wrong message to both citizens and businesses, that this public service is about to get a lot worse,” he wrote. “That alone could push away many mailers, including movie and video game distributors, prescription drug companies and magazines.”

Other readers called for the USPS to reduce delivery to three days a week, and for the agency to reject calls for privatization.
