WGBH Donors Opt Out of Mailings

About 100 people who have donated money to WGBH-TV, Boston, have called the station to request that their names not be shared with other solicitors in the wake of the admission by the publicly funded station that it had shared its donor lists with Democratic Party fundraisers. The station was the first of about 30 public stations around the country found to have shared their donor lists with politically affiliated fundraising entities, both Democratic and Republican. “Less than a half dozen” have requested a refund of their donations, said Jeanne Hopkins, vice president of corporate communications at WGBH. She said the station has put all of its direct mail activities on hold and has dismissed its list broker, whom she declined to name. The station has retained Pricewaterhouse-Coopers to conduct an audit of its fundraising practices.
