Webcast Will Be a Hack Job

Philadelphia taxi driver Kevin Gilbert will give his passengers a free ride Friday night, provided they let him Webcast their backseat activities on his Web site, LiveTaxi.com.

Gilbert is used to having a Webcam in his car. He shoots slide shows of city streets from his cab for use on his site.

Seven Webcams and three microphones will document the night.

The Webcast, known as “The Taxi Experiment,” will begin at 9 p.m. Friday night and continue until 3 a.m. Saturday morning. It will be broadcast on LiveTaxi and philly2nite.com, an arts, entertainment and nightlife site. philly2nite will host the Webcast.

“We felt it was a perfect fit to do with the Republican National Convention and all this voyeur play on television with shows like 'Survivor' and 'Big Brother,'” said Vijay Chattha, co-founder at philly2nite.

“We're doing a huge grass-roots campaign,” to draw traffic to the Webcast and also to find volunteers, by passing out flyers at Philadelphia nightclubs, he said.

Urban Groove, the parent company of philly2nite, will promote the Webcast through other nightlife portals that focus on Washington, Miami and San Diego.
