The U.S. Postal Service will offer a new service Sunday that allows mailers to learn the date and time their mail piece was received as well as to obtain the recipient's signature.
The service, called Signature Confirmation, will only be available for mailers that use USPS package services, such as Parcel Post; Bound Printed Matter; Library and Media Mail; and Priority Mail. It may also be combined with insured, registered, c.o.d. and special handling mail as well as with Restricted Delivery service if the item is insured for more than $50.
Mailers using the service will receive a written report showing the time and date of delivery with the recipient's signature. A signature waiver — allowing the postal delivery person to sign for the item if the recipient is unavailable and the mail piece can be left in a safe place — is also available.
Users can receive the report by mail, fax or electronically.
The cost to mailers with an electronic link to the USPS is $1.25 per piece. For mailers without an electronic link and others, including the general public, the cost is $1.75 per item.
