The South Jersey Processing and Distribution Center in Bellmawr, NJ, which had been closed last week for an anthrax inspection, was reopened Friday.
“Initial testing conducted by the FBI found no evidence of [anthrax] contamination,” said Paul Smith, a U.S. Postal Service spokesman.
He added that all mail would be moved. About 2 million pieces of mail, most of which was advertising mail, had sat idle at the facility since Wednesday.
Postal officials halted all operations at the facility Wednesday. The center, which serves 159 post offices and delivers mail to 1.1 million locations in southern New Jersey and parts of Delaware, is in Camden County, NJ. It was closed after a case of suspected skin anthrax developed there.
The Bellmawr plant is 35 miles from the Hamilton postal facility, which handled at least three anthrax-tainted letters.
