USPS Raises International Surface Rates

The U.S. Postal Service’s Board of Governors yesterday approved rate increases of 15 to 20 percent for selected categories of international mail.

The rate changes affect surface transportation of various types of printed materials, including regular printed matter and small packets to Mexico, book sheets and music to all countries except Canada and publishers’ periodicals to all countries except Canada.

The rate increases take effect May 28, except for publishers’ periodicals, which will become effective in January. The amount of the increase will vary among countries.

“A very small volume of mail is affected — about two-tenths of one percent of Postal Service revenues,” said Jim Wade, vice-president of the USPS’ International Business unit. “These rate adjustments better align revenues and costs.”
