The U.S. Postal Service announced yesterday it has filed a request with the Postal Rate Commission to establish a category of mail, Customized MarketMail, that would cover non-rectangular pieces up to 3.3 ounces in weight.
Currently mailers are not allowed to send triangular or oblong mail pieces that are less than one-quarter of an inch thick because these pieces are incompatible with USPS processing, sorting and handling steps. As a result, such mail must be drop at destination post offices so they bypass postal machines.
The filing said CMM would most likely consist of “low-volume, widely-distributed mailings of pieces that are unusual and relatively costly to produce.”
Prices would be based on Regular and Nonprofit Standard Mail basic tier rates plus a residual shape surcharge. Details of the filing are available at www.prc.gov.
If approved by the RPC, the Board of Governors of the USPS will make the final decision on the proposal.
