*US DMA to Take Over Brazilian DM Group

NEW ORLEANS — The U.S. Direct Marketing Association is about to take over the Brazilian Institute for Database Marketing.

The move is not an acquisition, sources at the DMA fall conference here said, but is happening at the request of the IBDM management. The organization is one of three Brazilian direct marketing organizations.

IBDM has been in trouble since the murder earlier this year of Victor Dauman, its longtime leader. Dauman was shot after he left an automated teller machine booth in Sao Paulo.

The U.S. DMA is taking over with Brazilian support, with Brazilian management and with the mission to develop the institution, the sources said.

Nevertheless, the move is likely to perturb the Europeans, who have thought for some years that the Americans were poaching on their territory in an effort to expand the association's reach and power.

The DMA has denied the charges, but differences with the Europeans persist.
