UrbanQ Settles FTC Rebate Charges

Internet retailer UrbanQ yesterday settled Federal Trade Commission charges that it failed to deliver promised rebates to more than 1,000 consumers.

UrbanQ agreed to pay $600,000 to repay consumers for the rebates, the FTC said. The retailer told consumers who bought items on its Web site that they would get rebates, dubbed “Q-bates,” of 70 percent to 100 percent of the purchase price on items, according to the FTC.

The rebates often failed to arrive within the promised time or never arrived, the FTC said.

Founded in early 2000, UrbanQ, Cedarhurst, NY, offered consumer goods, in particular apparel, the FTC said. The retailer offered rebates on about 70 percent of its items and required consumers to submit their rebates within 60 days of purchase, according to the FTC.
