Urban Outfitters Sales Up 21% for Quarter

Urban Outfitters Inc., Philadelphia, said yesterday that total company sales for the quarter ended Jan. 31 increased 21 percent to $103.8 million from $85.6 million in the comparable quarter of the previous fiscal year.

Comparable-store sales rose 8 percent in the quarter while direct-to-consumer sales increased 3 percent. Wholesale sales fell 31 percent, primarily because of reduced fall and holiday shipments.

Sales for the 12 months ended Jan. 31 increased 18 percent to $348.9 million from $295.3 million in the same 12 months of the previous fiscal year.

Comparable-store sales for fiscal year 2002 increased 3 percent. Direct-to-consumer sales increased 14 percent for the year while wholesale sales fell 11 percent.

Net sales included — for the three months ended Jan. 31 — a direct response (catalog and Web sites) total of $7.877 million, compared with $7.631 million in the same period for the previous year. The corresponding numbers for the 12-month periods that ended Jan. 31 include $24.768 million (2002) and $21.666 million (2001).
