UPS Upgrades Business Mail Processing

UPS Mail Innovations, the business mail services unit of United Parcel Service, said yesterday that it has deployed an advanced technology system for business mail processing.

UPS Mail Innovations expedites flats, mail pieces less than one pound and bound printed matter for businesses by providing the upstream mail processes, such as pickup, sorting, weighing, applying postage and inducting them into the U.S. Postal Service for final delivery.

UPS said the system, called the Automated Processing System, reduces the manual handling of flat business mail, which includes items such as annual reports, brochures and calendars.

APS streamlines processing of flats by handling the weighing, sorting, application of proper postage and verification of addresses. The system accepts various materials including paper, plastic and cardboard, and can process multiple sizes of mail pieces.

UPS said the system evaluates how best to route a mail piece. With this information, the system sorts, weighs and applies postage and determines the most efficient path.

APS is deployed in nearly all 11 UPS Mail Innovations processing centers nationwide.
