UPS Drivers in Asia Get New Handheld Computers

United Parcel Service rolled out a new generation of handheld computers yesterday for its drivers in Asia featuring Global Positioning System satellite technology.

GPS will let UPS locate the most convenient driver to respond to unscheduled pickups. Eventually, the link will help drivers searching for an unfamiliar address and sound an alert if they're in the wrong location for a delivery.

More than 800 of the computers will be deployed in Asia next year. Developed with Symbol Technologies, UPS is deploying 40,000 globally this year. The company plans to have 70,000 in use worldwide by the end of 2007.

UPS' business in Asia is growing at double-digit rates, so the Atlanta company is focusing on the area. Last month, UPS said it agreed to open an international air hub at Pudong International Airport in 2007. It also announced the introduction of domestic express service in China.
