UPS Buys iShip From Stamps.com

United Parcel Service yesterday bought the assets of multiple-carrier shipping service iShip from Stamps.com, the online postage vendor.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Stamps.com, Santa Monica, CA, said the sale was part of its efforts to refocus the company on its mailing and shipping service for small businesses.

Earlier this month, Stamps.com bought a set of patents and other intellectual property rights from E-Stamp Corp., including the E-Stamp name and the E-Stamp.com Internet domain. E-Stamp was a Stamps.com competitor before it said in November that it would exit the Internet-based postage industry.

UPS recently began offering three new services that it obtained through the acquisition of outside companies. They are Hybrid Mail, a blend of electronic and postal First-Class mail; Flats, which allows mailers to expedite the delivery of mail that is larger than letter-size mail; and UPS Presort, a daily mail pickup service that UPS is piloting for small and midsize businesses. All three services debuted in April.
