Twitter acquires SMS firm Cloudhopper

Microblogging platform Twitter, which launched its Promoted Tweets advertising service earlier this month, announced its acquisition of Cloudhopper, a SMS infrastructure company, on April 23.

Twitter bought the company “to help us further grow and scale our SMS service,” said Kevin Thau, director of mobile business development at Twitter, on the company’s blog. He added that Twitter processes nearly 1 billion SMS Tweets a day.

Twitter has upped its interaction with marketers in recent months. Starbucks, Best Buy, Virgin America, Red Bull, Sony Pictures and Bravo were among the first brands to advertise via Promoted Tweets.

The company also changed its terms of service last September to allow for advertising.

A Twitter representative could not be immediately reached for additional comment.
