TRUSTe Updates Privacy License Agreement

Privacy certification and seal program provider TRUSTe is to launch version 8 of its license agreement today in an effort to strengthen the program's certification and compliance elements.

Several key changes were made within version 8, according to TRUSTe. For example, companies must allow consumers to opt out before sharing their personal information with any third party unless the sharing is part of a third-party service relationship.

Licensees must adhere to user preferences for no less than 12 months with upfront disclosure of intended changes and notify consumers as to the length of time their preferences will remain fixed at the time of registration and via e-mail when preferences expire.

Licensees also must gain TRUSTe approval on all notices of a change in practice as well as ensure that all privacy disclosures are consistent under version 8.

The new agreement is available on the group's Web site at truste.org.
