Top Fairchild Executive Quits Conde Nast

Mary G. Berner resigned as group president of Conde Nast Publications' Fairchild unit three months after an internal restructuring consolidated all magazine units under the Conde Nast brand.

She leaves the New York company at the end of the month after serving six years at Fairchild as president/CEO. Her unit included magazines like Jane, Details and Cookie as well as fashion and retail trades like Supermarket News, WWD and the consumer-focused W.

Charles H. Townsend, president/CEO of Conde Nast, now will directly handle Jane, Details and Cookie. Mitchell B. Fox, group president of Conde Nast, will be in charge of the other fashion and retail trade titles as well as W magazine, the Conde Nast Bridal Group and The Golf Digest Publications.

News of Berner's departure comes a day after Dow Jones & Co. said Karen Elliott House would quit as publisher of The Wall Street Journal. House's husband, Dow Jones chairman/CEO Peter Kann, also departs as CEO, succeeded by Richard F. Zannino, the company's chief operating officer.
