This Mother’s Day, moms want to relax: Shop.com survey

Mothers want to spend their day on the beach drinking wine and listening to an iPod or enjoying a day at the spa, according to a new Shop.com survey.

The national online quiz – called “What Do Mothers Really Want for Mother’s Day?” – at www.shop.com/momquiz found that 40 percent of respondents said a “Perfect Me” day was sitting on a beach listening to their iPods while a “handsome silent manservant pours a glass of chardonnay into their battery-powered cooler.” Twenty percent envision a spa day with that same companion massaging their feet.

“We are learning increasingly that what moms really want on Mother’s Day is to just sit down, relax and be waited on,” said Mondy Beller, senior vice president of marketing at Shop.com, Monterey, CA. “If they’ve got a ‘perfect day’ for themselves, forget about taking a run, going to the mall, jet setting or being wined and dined. On Mother’s Day, they want to be taken care of and, of course, they want to be with their families.”

Participants in Shop.com’s second Mother’s Day quiz are busy people. Of the approximately 1,100 respondents, more than half work full time, and 10 percent are employed part time. Another 9 percent are self-employed.

Eighty-one percent of the respondents said they have one to three children, 42 percent of whom are age 10 or younger. Half of the respondents were between 30 and 50.

For Mother’s Day, almost half of the respondents said they’d like to go to brunch at a favorite restaurant with their families and have a night at the movies with their sweethearts. Twenty-eight percent want a gourmet breakfast at home without having to clean up.

One-third of respondents chose their child’s ceramic handprint holding a pair of diamond earrings as an ideal gift, while another third selected the ceramic handprint wrapped in a pair of tickets to St. Bart’s.
