The Advocate, under new ownership, cuts frequency

The Advocate, recently acquired by Regent Media, will switch to a monthly distribution strategy as of January 2009.

Currently a bi-monthly, the magazine joins a host of other magazines that have scaled back their frequency, including US News and World Report, which scaled back from weekly to bi-weekly this year. The Advocate reported a total paid and verified circulation of 179,605 — 2.6% above its guaranteed rate base of 175,000 — in its June 30, 2008 publisher’s statement. Representatives of The Advocate could not be reached for comment as of press time.

The change coincides with The Advocate‘s ongoing site re-launch, which has the magazine’s news team closely following the DNC.

The Advocate officially joined the Regent Media earlier this month, along with sister PlanetOut properties Out, Out Traveler, HIV Plus and Alyson Books. Regent also acquired PlanetOut’s Web properties, advocate.com, out.com, outtraveler.com and Alyson.com.

“Regent Media now owns the best-known and most respected brands in the gay and lesbian marketplace. Our brands signify the highest quality content for the LGBT community via television, magazines, books and the web,” said Stephen P. Jarchow, chairman of Regent Media, and Paul Colichman, president of Regent Media, in a joint statement. “These seminal properties will continue to document and to enrich the culture and history of our nation.”
The new acquisitions joined Regent’s existing cache of gay media holdings: here! Networks, heretv.com, here! Films, here! Home Entertainment, here! Tunes, gaywired.com, shewired.com and gaysports.com.
