TelZero Launches Targeted Telephone Ad Service

TelZero Inc., Fort Lauderdale, FL, launched a service last week that provides free long-distance calling to consumers who agree to hear targeted advertisements played through their telephones.

The service is available only to residents of Florida’s Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, but TelZero plans to roll it out throughout the continental United States.

Consumers use the service by dialing a toll-free number and answering four demographic questions. TelZero then plays one minute of advertising, which is targeted based on the information the customers provide. The customers then receive five free minutes of long-distance telephone service to anywhere in the United States.

The company said it had lined up about 100 advertisers.

Other companies offer similar services for free cellular phone calls, including Spotcast Communications, Silver Spring, MD, which plays 10-second, targeted ads in exchange for one minute of free calling time.
