Tech Reporters Form Business Writers Group

Six displaced technology writers from Ziff Davis Media Inc.'s defunct technology magazine Interactive Week have banded together to form the Business Writers Group, a company that offers copy for marketing materials, white papers, annual reports and newsletters. Editing services also are available.

Technology writing experience is the group's main selling point.

“We're all long-time technology writers, so that's our first area of expertise,” said Randy Barrett, the Washington-based president of the start-up. “But we're broadening out to cover any kind of business needs.”

The Business Writers Group charges on a per-word basis (between $1.50 and $2) for white papers and other word-count oriented projects, and on a project basis for marketing collateral.

The group fills a void left by existing marketing communications companies that often create bland and corporate-speak filled copy, Barrett said.

“Part of the problem is that these companies are churning these things out, and the copywriters are often junior people,” he said.

And as former technology editors who have sifted through technology companies' press releases and other communications, the Business Writers Group also believes it can help companies avoid the jargon that dilutes so many firms' communications.

“Our job is to bust as much of the jargon as possible,” said Barrett. However, if a company wants jargon, “we can do it, but I'd certainly advise against it.”
