Study: State Government Web Sites Slack on Privacy Policies

Few state government Internet sites adhere to commonly accepted privacy practices, according to a study conducted in December by the nonprofit group OMB Watch.

Most importantly, nearly all sites lack a clear privacy policy, and only two of the 25 states that tracked users' movements told them they were doing so, the study found.

In addition, most state government Web sites lack legislative calendars as well as e-mail links to individual legislators and links to other branches of state government.

However, Ryan Turner, author of the report, said many states are improving their sites.

“States are basically dealing with a lot of issues that the federal government has been addressing for some time, but in a shorter window,” Turner said.
