The average male fundraiser in the United States earns as much as $24,000 a year more than the average female fundraiser, according to study results released yesterday by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
“The study revealed a disheartening disparity in the salaries among men and women,” Paulette Maehara, president/CEO of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Alexandria, VA, said in a statement. “Closing this gap will be a central part of AFP's long-term goals.”
The association polled 1,200 fundraisers in the United States and Canada with a questionnaire compiled from the questions most frequently asked of the AFP Resource Center regarding compensation.
Other findings included:
• The average salary for U.S. respondents was $61,223 while the average in Canada was $67,600 (Canadian).
• Fundraisers employed by international organizations claimed to make an average of $20,000 more than those working for local charities.
• More experienced fundraisers, on average, reported higher salaries than less-experienced counterparts.
• Positive correlations existed between compensation and an organization's size as well as between compensation and education.
