Metzger Associates, Boulder, CO, has been named public relations agency by Sprint PCS to raise the media profile of the wireless brand.
One of six finalists in the Sprint PCS pitch, Metzger becomes lead agency for the telecom brand, supported by local PR shops across the country. Kratz & Jensen Inc., New York, was the incumbent.
“Really what they're looking for is strategic counsel, strategic planning and creative campaigns,” said Jennifer Dulles, account group manager at Metzger.
The Sprint PCS gain is another addition to Metzger's portfolio of telecom clients, which include Velocom, Vicorp, Formus Communications and Gold Systems. It does project work for MCI WorldCom.
Sprint PCS serves 4,000 cities and communities across the country. It is the largest provider of digital wireless Web access.
Metzger originally was named Sprint PCS' PR agency for the Colorado and Utah areas. The agency helped the company to introduce new products, including wireless Web connections, to those markets.
“Now what we're looking to do is to continue to create and sustain the momentum for the wireless Web [product],” Dulles said.
The agency, which last year had revenue of $2.1 million and projects $4.5 million this year, will target its communications to the investment and business communities and the youth market.
“In 1999, as a local agency doing work in Colorado and Utah, we helped launch wireless Web for consumers,” Dulles said. “This year, we have already assisted Sprint PCS with the launch of wireless Web for business.
“While there are many launches planned — handset launches, national network coverage announcements — the wireless Web and its evolution will be an area of emphasis for us.”
