Spiegel Will Close Call Center, Cut 550 Jobs

The dismantling of Spiegel is going beyond simply the sale of its well-known properties.

In yet another development last week, the company said its Spiegel Group TeleServices call center in Hampton, VA, that received customer service calls and catalog orders is expected to close by the end of the year, and 550 workers will lose their jobs.

Spiegel spokesperson Debbie Koopman said the division's New Waterford, Canada, facility had been designated to provide services for Spiegel Catalog and Newport News. She didn't specify when layoffs would begin.

“We told associates last week,” Koopman said Friday, “that we would be working out a transition plan. It will be a gradual transition out of the operation.”
