Sony Shuts Down Web Site After PlayStation Orders Swamp Server

Sony Corp. was forced to shut down its Web site on Friday after it was swamped with orders for its eagerly anticipated PlayStation2, which is scheduled to be released in Japan on March 4.

According to reports, the site received 100,000 hits in the minute after online sales became available.

PlayStation2 is Sony’s update on its popular PlayStation home video game system. PlayStation has sold 70 million units worldwide. The new system has more advanced graphics and computer abilities as well as the ability to play CD and DVD-ROMs. Sony stropped its Web ordering late Thursday after its server was swamped with orders. Earlier this month a video and music shop in Japan was hit with 10,000 advanced orders in just two days for the player.

PlayStation2 will be unveiled in Japan next month and will become available in the United States and Europe this fall.
