Sony, Offspring Shelve Online Give Away

The rock band Offspring will not release its upcoming album “Conspiracy of One” for free on the Internet. The band averted a contentious legal battle with its record company, Sony Music, by nixing the promotion.

Sony is one of several companies suing Napster, the Redwood City, CA, company that allows users to swap music for free.

According to reports, a single from the Offspring album will be available for downloading on Sept. 29, and fans will be eligible to win $1 million by downloading the song.

Originally, the band planned to make the entire album available online before its release on Nov. 14.
